Discussion and Symbolic Representation:
The
Secret Garden centers on a 10-year-old girl whose name is Mary Lennox. After
the loss of her parents and servants due to cholera epidemic she was sent to
live in England with her widowed uncle. There the fastidious housekeeper named
as Mrs. Medlock abandoned her in the house and kept her from going outside. She
came to know that her uncle had a son in the mansion who is sick and crippled. The
name of the boy was Colin. Colin and Mary along with Dicken became good friends.
It was evident that health of Colin was linked with the nature he experienced
out of his mansion. The garden had positive impact on the health of Colin as
well as Mary. The three children Colin, Dicken and Mary continued to enjoy
their stay outside the mansion in the garden and experienced the healing done
by the nature surrounding them. After some days spending in the garden health
of Colin was healed and he enjoyed the natural healing of body and mind. When
Mary’s Uncle returned, he was surprised to see the change in the health of his
boy.
The
novel has symbolic characters and different motifs as to link the theory with
the real incidents depicted in the novel. The Robin represents the hope
and consciousness towards the natural habitat and interaction of humans and
nature. When Mary saw the Robin in garden, she came to know that the Robin had
similarity with her because the Robin too was lonely like her and found his
eternal peace in the natural environment of the garden. The Garden is
the representation of human and nature meeting ground. The role of happiness
and healing done by the plantation in the garden is the natural bond between
humans and nature. The Garden also played a role in healing the physical and
mental health of Mary and Colins. The Yorkshire Dialect is a motif in
the novel due to which Mary thinks that adoption of accent lessens the class
difference between Dicken and her friendship. Colin has the similar eyes as of
his mother which looked deceased and sick. Colin eyes are a motif in the novel
because they tend to be happier and livelier due to his visit to the Mrs.
Craven garden. The songs in the novel as sung by the friends in the
garden are a symbol of hope that adds to the magical impact of the garden on
children mood and health. These songs able to relax and realize the mystic
power of nature. The children explored the garden and planted seeds to
revitalize the garden. Their friendship became more stronger and they enjoyed
the interaction of nature and its impact on their life. Her uncle when returned
was surprised to see the transformation in his son’s health and the bloom in
the abandoned garden. The Secret Garden symbolizes human spirit. It
shows that human spirit dies out if it is not watered by the serene beauty of
the nature. Just like plants, human soul needs to be taken care of and it
should have some interaction with the charming beauty of nature. Nature helps revitalizing
the soul and body. The novel also elaborated that if things are abandoned, they
get ruined just like the plants in the garden. Plants symbolize nurture
in the human soul. When plants are watered then they seem to be livelier just
like human soul. Human soul is connected to nature and is a part of it. To
revitalize human soul there is a need to interact with the charming beauty of
the nature and experience the serenity of nature. Nature heals body and soul.
